Upcoming Cold
Weather Reminders

According to the US National Weather Service, the Front Range is expected to experience bitter cold, dangerously cold wind chills, and snow from Friday, January 17, through Monday, January 20.

Below are some resources, tips, and reminders. Stay warm, Firestone!

Online Area Resources

If you’re on social media, be sure to follow the area’s US National Weather Service page (https://www.facebook.com/NWSBoulder) and the Carbon Valley Emergency Management Agency (https://www.facebook.com/CarbonValleyEMA). Both share critical information during weather incidents and are great resources for the community.

Resources For Your Family

This weather is not fun for anyone. Please bring your pets indoors, and if you need to leave your house this weekend, please remember to dress appropriately and be prepared for the extreme weather.  Read more cold weather safety tips at https://www.weather.gov/safety/cold.

Resources For Your Home

With below-freezing temperatures, the Engineering & Utilities Department wants to remind residents that sustained temperatures below 20 degrees Fahrenheit can cause pipes to freeze during the winter months. Freezing pipes could cause leaks and expensive damage to your home or business. Here are a few tips to help avoid this:

    • Turn off outdoor faucets, and be sure to disconnect hoses.
    • Insulate water pipes that may be vulnerable to the cold or have caused problems before.
    • Identify and seal openings that allow cold air into the home.
    • Keep the garage doors closed to prevent excess cold air from entering the home.
    • Periodically open cabinet doors under the kitchen or bathroom sink to allow warm air to circulate around the plumbing.
    • Leave interior doors open to rooms with uneven heat distribution to allow the warm air to circulate evenly.

Resources For the Road

Town Staff are prepared to handle this weather event.  As with all storms, staff will monitor the weather and road conditions and address areas of concern if necessary.

  • Information on the Town of Firestone's Snow Removal Operations and the snow route map are available at www.firestoneco.gov/snow.
  • Move Vehicles from Snow Routes: Help the Town with snow removal operations by moving vehicles from priority snow routes.
  • Give Snow Plows Plenty of Room to Work: The Firestone snow plow team will work efficiently to clear roadways of snow for safe passage. If you meet a snowplow on the roads, please use caution and maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and the plow. It is illegal to pass a town, county, or state-operated snowplow while it’s working with its yellow lights flashing and is driving in tandem with one or more other snowplows.

With icy and snowy roads expected, drivers should be prepared for possible travel difficulties and poor driving conditions. Please be cautious if you do need to drive this weekend.

  • Stay Home: Only drive if needed, avoiding any unnecessary travel.
  • Drive Slowly: Accelerate and decelerate gradually; drive with care.
  • Increase Distance: Leave five to six seconds between you and the vehicle in front of you.
  • Know Your Brakes: Make sure your brakes are working properly.
  • Prepare Your Car: Make sure you can see out all windows. Clear snow and ice from your car, especially the roof.
  • Prepare for Emergencies: Bring a flashlight, blanket, water, first aid kit, and other supplies.
