Keep Leaves Out of the Roadway: Help Protect Our Community
With the change of seasons and the unusually warm fall weather, we’ve noticed an increase in residents blowing leaves into the roadway and asking when the street sweeper will be by to pick them up. The short answer: it won’t.
Please remember that it is unlawful in Firestone, as it is in many other communities, to blow or place yard waste, including grass clippings and fallen leaves, into the street. The street sweeper is not designed to remove this type of debris.
Why does this matter? Leaves and grass clippings in the roadway can:
- Clog storm drains and cause localized flooding
- Create hazardous conditions for drivers, cyclists, and motorcyclists
- Enter streams and rivers, contributing to water quality issues
To help keep our community clean and safe, please dispose of leaves properly by bagging, mulching, or composting them.
Proper Disposal Options
- Bag and set out: Place bagged leaves at the curb on your designated trash pickup day.
- Mow and mulch: Use a mulching mower to chop leaves into fine pieces that act as natural fertilizer for your lawn.
- Compost: Add fallen leaves to your compost bin to create nutrient-rich soil for gardens and landscaping.
Thank you for doing your part to keep Firestone’s roadways safe and our stormwater system functioning properly. If you have questions about code violations, please contact the non-emergency number and ask to speak with a Firestone Community Service Officer at 720-652-4222.
