Public Records Request
The Town of Firestone is committed to transparency and providing easy access to public records, according to the Colorado Open Records Act (CORA). The Town Clerk is the official custodian of all public records, except criminal justice records as defined by C.R.S. § 24-72-302, and will process all requests for public records pursuant to C.R.S. Section 24-72-203(1)(a) of the Public Records Act (the "Act").
To initiate a request for public records, a Public Records Request form must be submitted to the Town Clerk's office. This applies to the public records of the Town and the Firestone Urban Renewal Authority.
Requesting a Public Record
The Town of Firestone has a NEW Public Records Portal (NextRequest) that allows anyone to submit a request, correspond with Town staff, and track their requests online. The portal also enables users to search for published public records requests and documents.
Please visit the portal to search for available records or submit a new request.
Town of Firestone Policy & Procedures
The Colorado Open Records Act requires that all public records be open for inspection by any person at reasonable times, except as provided by the law. The Act expressly authorizes the official custodian of public records to adopt rules concerning the inspection of such records, which are reasonably necessary to protect the integrity of the records and to prevent unnecessary interference with the regular discharge of the duties of the custodian or the custodian's office.
After receiving a records request, the Town Clerk's Office will review and process it according to the Town of Firestone Colorado Open Records Act Policy and Procedures.

- What contact information should I include on my request?
-
Requestors are required to provide some contact information. Providing an email address will allow you to log into the portal to view your request and access records uploaded to it. In addition, this will enable staff to send you notifications regarding the status of your request.
- Who can see my contact information?
-
The requestor's contact information is not published on the portal. However, all information sent and received by any employee is subject to the CORA; therefore, any communications and data exchanged or provided to the Town are public records and may be released in response to a public records request.
- How detailed should my request be?
-
The Town of Firestone strongly recommends including details that will facilitate a focused search:
- Describe the nature of the record being requested and/or provide the name or identification number of the records to the best of your knowledge.
- Provide the time frame or date range you are interested in
- When possible, identify the departments and/or employees that may be involved in the subject matter.
- Avoid abbreviations.
- When applicable, provide specific addresses.
- How does the Town process Public Records Request?
-
The Town responds to requests for public records through its public records portal, NextRequest, pursuant to CORA. After receiving a records request, the Town Clerk's Office will review and process it according to the Town of Firestone Colorado Open Records Act Policy and Procedures.
- Are there any fees or charges for public records requests?
-
The Town's research and retrieval fee is $41.37 per hour commencing after the first hour of work. Fees for copies, printouts, and photographs are in accordance with C.R.S § 24-72-205, pursuant to which the fee for a copy of a standard page is .25 cents per page, and the actual cost or providing a copy in a format other than a standard page.
If the Official Custodian reasonably believes that fulfillment of any request may result in more than one hour of staff time to research, retrieve, segregate, or prepare the records, the Official Custodian shall require a monetary deposit before commencing work to research and retrieve or prepare the records. The Applicant will be required to pre-pay the estimated costs before the Town commences action to retrieve and make available the records. If the final amount is greater than the estimate, the Applicant shall pay the additional amount at the time the records are made available. If the final amount is less than the estimate, the overpayment amount shall be refunded.

- When and how can public records be inspected?
-
Public records may not always be immediately available for inspection, as some are stored off-site or require legal review before release. To confirm the availability of specific records, please submit a records request.
Electronic records identified as responsive will be made available through the public records portal. These records will be sent to the requestor and accessible for public review on the portal.
If you prefer to review responsive documents in person, you may request an in-person inspection. Depending on availability, an appointment may be required. Once your request has been fulfilled, you can inspect the records at the Town Clerk's Office during regular business hours: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (excluding Town holidays) at 9950 Park Avenue, Firestone, CO 80520.
- Do all requests get published on the portal?
-
No. Most requests will be published, but if the record is a personnel file or deemed sensitive, it will not be published and will only be sent to the requestor.
