Firestone Mayor Pro-tem Paul Sorensen has been appointed to serve on the Ed & Ruth Lehman YMCA of Longmont Board of Directors. Sorensen will be a representative for the Carbon Valley area and will work with the three communities to determine recreational needs and programs for the area.
Sorensen has been in discussion with the YMCA throughout the last few years on ways to increase the organization’s well-established and successful programs in the Carbon Valley area. The Longmont YMCA currently provides after school care at a Carbon Valley elementary school, as well as other educational programs that support the community. Sorensen believes a sensible part of that vision would also include the planning for a future YMCA facility in Firestone.
“My goal as the Carbon Valley representative to the YMCA board is to recognize needs within our community and implement programs to meet those needs through education and training,” Sorensen said. “This will require gathering information, brainstorming solutions and working on a well-organized plan. I’m excited to grow our community’s values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.”
The first project for the area will include developing a summer camp focused on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
Sorensen plans to assemble a committee of Carbon Valley residents who are motivated and dedicated to working toward a positive impact for the community. Residents who are interested in participating should call Sorensen at 303-963-6503.
